Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the rate I get different from the one shown here?

This converter shows the mid-market rate, which is the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are quoting. Nobody sells you currency at that rate. Banks, airport bureaux, and card networks add a margin of roughly 0.5 to 2 percent, and airport exchange desks routinely take 8 to 12 percent. Expect to receive slightly less than the figure shown, and treat that gap as the cost of the transaction.

Should I exchange money before I travel or after I arrive?

Withdraw local currency from a bank ATM after you arrive, using a card that does not charge foreign transaction fees. That consistently beats exchanging cash at home and always beats an airport bureau. Carry a small amount of local currency for the first taxi or train, then withdraw the rest at a bank-operated ATM rather than a standalone machine in a tourist area.

Should I pay in local currency or my home currency?

Always choose the local currency. When a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, that is dynamic currency conversion, and the merchant sets the exchange rate with a markup of 3 to 6 percent. Paying in the local currency lets your own bank convert at a far better rate. The offer is designed to sound helpful and costs you money every time.

How much cash should I carry while travelling?

Carry two to three days of expected spending in cash and rely on cards for the rest. The right amount varies sharply by destination. Japan still runs on cash at small restaurants, shrines, and rural stations, whereas Australia is close to cashless and many Sydney cafes no longer accept notes at all. Check your specific destination rather than assuming a single rule.

How often are these exchange rates updated?

The rates on this page are a fixed snapshot with the date shown beneath the converter. Currency markets move continuously during trading hours, so a rate that is days old can drift by one or two percent, and more for volatile currencies such as the Turkish lira. Use this converter for planning a budget, and check a live rate before making a large transfer.
